Reddy bikeshare to Celebrate its First Year of Operation in the City of Buffalo with a Birthday Bash

August 1, 2017

BUFFALO, N.Y. , July 20, 2017 Shared Mobility, Inc. and Independent Health will celebrate the first full year of the Reddy bikeshare program in the City of Buffalo with a birthday bash at Buffalo RiverWorks on Wednesday, July 26 starting at 5:30 p.m.

Individual and corporate Reddy bikeshare members, bike enthusiasts including representatives from Campus Wheelworks, GObike Buffalo and Slow Roll Buffalo, Independent Health members, and the general public are all invited to attend to help blow out the candles.

As part of the birthday celebration, awards will be presented to several Reddy bikeshare members, including Daniel Britt, who has traveled the most on a Reddy bike the past year, logging more than 350 miles.

“I don’t have a car, so I couple Reddy bikes with Zipcar in order to get around in a really inexpensive way,” said Britt. “I use Reddy bikes for literally everything – work, hobbies and errands. The basket is awesome, which is how I can use the bikes to shop. It’s a great utility, and the bikes are so convenient and fun.”

Britt said he has been away from Buffalo for 15 years so it’s exciting to be back and to witness all that is happening here. “The city has done a complete 180. It’s fantastic to see so many people out enjoying the waterfront and on our streets, using their Reddy bikes,” he added.

Though it’s Reddy bikeshare’s birthday, the bikeshare program is giving a gift to the Buffalo community. The public is invited to take advantage of a 50 percent membership discount for the remainder of the 2017 season using the BUFFALOBYBIKE2017 promo code.

Those interested can visit www.Reddybikeshare.com or download the Social Bicycles app to redeem a membership and enter the code during the payment process.

According to Jennifer White, marketing and communications director for Reddy bikeshare, milestones for the first full year of operation include:

  • More than 4,000 total riders
  • More than 40,000 total miles traveled (the distance around the earth, and then some)
  • More than 1.6 million calories burned (equivalent to about 10,000 chicken wings, minus the blue cheese)

White also said Delaware Park and Canalside are two of the most popular stations to pick up a Reddy bike.

“On a beautiful summer day in Buffalo, you can bet you’re going to see tons of people riding bikes – Reddy bikes, their own bikes or on group rides using a mix of both,” said White. “After only one short year, Reddy bikeshare has helped solidify Buffalo as a major biking city and destination, and we couldn’t be more proud.”

Independent Health President and CEO Michael W. Cropp, M.D. said the health plan is very pleased with its partnership with Shared Mobility. “Together, we’re working toward creating a culture of health in Western New York by supporting recreation and exercise through bicycling,” said Dr. Cropp. “We remain dedicated to improving health and wellness in our region, and enhancing our growing reputation as a bike-friendly community.”

The Reddy bikeshare program in Buffalo officially launched on July 21, 2016, with 200 “smart” bicycles with GPS capabilities located at 35 stations throughout the city. New locations were recently added due to support from Reddy bikeshare’s expansion partners at:

  • M&T Plaza, the bank’s corporate headquarters on Main Street
  • A second location on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus
  • Turner Lofts at 295 Niagara St.

New stations that will open later this summer or early this fall, include:

  • Second locations at both Buffalo State College and Canisius College
  • D’Youville College
  • M&T Bank’s Hertel Parkside branch

The birthday celebration at Buffalo RiverWorks will include food, giveaways (while supplies last) and an awards presentation for the most active members. In addition, a group ride will commence at 5:00 p.m. from the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus at 640 Ellicott St. ending at Buffalo RiverWorks. The event is open to the public and anyone is welcome to join whether on a Reddy bike or a personal bike.
