At The Martin Group, we’re always on the lookout for fresh talent as we continue to grow, evolve, and improve. Recently, we asked two new members of our creative team, graphic designer Aziza Abdul-Alim and associate creative director Frank Conjerti, to interview each other for the latest installment of Employee Spotlight.

How did you get your start in the industry?

Aziza: After two years at Villa Maria I transferred to the University at Buffalo. After four internships including Block Club and, lastly, Say Yes Buffalo, I was hired at Say Yes – initially part-time, then as their full-time, in-house designer.

Frank: After graduating from UB, I worked as a freelance video editor and web designer until landing consistent work at a small video production house. I spent four years working with motion graphics and video editing there. I eventually landed my first agency gig at Quinlan, where I spent over eight years.

What’s the best career advice you’ve received?

Aziza: Work with your head down in your 20s; when you hit your 30s, look up.

Frank: The opposite of success is boredom.

What’s your favorite hobby?

Aziza: I love to paint and draw. I find it so therapeutic and relaxing. I’m also learning Blender, a 3D modeling and animation program in my spare time.

Frank: Even though I do it all day, I really enjoy writing in my spare time – especially screenwriting. It’s so removed from what I do at work but still forces me to be creative.

What’s your favorite guilty pleasure TV show?

Aziza: I love crime documentaries. Especially Netflix’s Evil Genius. (Editor’s note: She has yet to see Making a Murderer, so we question her commitment.)

Frank: I think I’m the only person in the office willing to admit I enjoy South Park. It’s so well-written, you just have to get past the fart jokes to really appreciate it.

What’s your favorite type of music?

Aziza: Anything really. Hip-hop, rock, alternative. Anything except country.

Frank: Whatever Spotify tells me to listen to, I like. Anything except country.

What’s the last thing that made you laugh?

Aziza: This conversation!

Frank: I rewatched Season Two of Documentary Now!, a series of mockumentaries. It’s hilarious.

What’s your favorite animal?

Aziza: Big jungle cats like tigers and jaguars.

Frank: Any type of whale.

What do you like most about The Martin Group?

Aziza: I love the idea of learning so much about the industry while working alongside such a great team of people. There’s never a dull moment here!

Frank: The talent level here is off the charts, and that really pushes you to do your best work. It’s great to learn from everyone, and the variety of clients keeps everything interesting.
